Center for the Study of Liberal Education for Adults

Established by a grant from the Fund for Adult Education in 1951, the Center for the Study of Liberal Education for Adults (CSLEA) worked with universities seeking to initiate or to improve adult education programs. Its purpose was to help American higher education develop greater effectiveness and a deeper sense of responsibility for the liberal education of adults. During its tenure the Center had three directors; John S. Diekhoff (1952-1953), John B. Schwertman (1953-1956), and A.A. Liveright (1956-1968). The records include correspondence, organizational files, publication files, writings, and miscellany. Key correspondents, mostly from the Center, are James T. Carey, Alexander N. Charters, Roger DeCrow, John S. Diekhoff, C. Scott Fletcher, Freda H. Goldman, Morton Gordon, Kenneth Haygood, Cyril Orvin Houle, A. A. Liveright, Harry L. Miller, John B. Schwertman, Peter E. Wight, Clifford.

Papers of the Mexican muralist. An epigrapher and sculptor, Wight acted as secretary, translator, and technical assistant to Diego Rivera during the latter's sojourn in the United States. Collection includes a variety of materials relating to Rivera's mural work in Detroit, San Francisco, and New York, including technical documents, correspondence, miscellaneous holograph and typescript manuscripts, photographs, and printed material.

Bleier, Edward

Ed Bleier worked in almost every aspect of radio and television communication, culminating in his position as president of Warner Bros. Domestic Pay-TV, Cable and Network Features division. Collection comprises both personal and professional files relating to strategy, management, analysis and marketing for Warner Bros. movie and television development and includes proposals, books, pamphlets, laser discs, videocassettes and DVDs, and multimedia materials.

Abrams, Frank W. (Frank Whittemore), 1889-1976

Papers of the American executive. Abrams graduated from Syracuse University (Engineering) in 1912, shortly thereafter joined Standard Oil of New Jersey where he served as Director (1940) and Chairman of the Board (1946-1954). Papers include correspondence (1953-1961); a transcript of recorded reminiscences of Abrams by the Columbia University Oral History Project Office; photographs; and published materials, including articles by and about Abrams, clippings, and printed speeches.

Farrell, Joseph Freeman, Herbert Gold, Corliss Lamont, Lucy Robbins Lang, John Lydenburg, Georgia McKinley, Fulmer Mood, Walter Ripton Morris, Wright Morris, Richard Rovere, Evelyn Scott, Lincoln Steffins, and Ella Winter, among others. Also correspondence and editorial reader's reports for Macmillan Publishing Company. Writings include articles, book manuscripts, a journal (1942-1973), lectures, as well as research notes, correspondence, and memorabilia relating to the production of Hicks' biography of John Reed. Large collection of printed material includes book reviews, clippings, and an assortment of Leftist pamphlets and periodicals from the 1930s.

Mann, Marty, 1904-

Papers of the American advertising and public relations executive. Ms. Mann founded the National Council on Alcoholism in 1944, and served as its executive director until 1968. Collection includes correspondence (1944-1964); desk calendars (1946-1965); scrapbooks (1944-1962); manuscripts (1944-1948); speeches; and files of the National Council on Alcoholism, including executive minutes (1957-1965), board minutes (1954-1965), documentation on conferences and programs; and other organizational records.
